Nashville Wraps’ customer Piggy Paint is taking their eco-friendly, non-toxic nail polish business from the toes of little girls in Arkansas all the way to Hollywood.
Melanie Hurley, founder of Piggy Paint, was a stay-at-home mom from Springdale, Arkansas. Melanie became concerned about chemicals in nail polish for her two little girls. One day while she was painting her daughter’s fingernails over a foam plate, she dropped a big glob of the solvent-based polish onto the plate. Shortly after, the polish began to bubble and “ate” through the plate. She looked in dismay at the hole and decided to test all of their other “kid” polishes on the foam. Within minutes, all of the solvent-based polishes began to bubble and eventually left big holes in the plate.
From that day on, she decided that any flammable substance that could eat through foam was unacceptable for her children’s fingernails, which would inevitably end up in their mouths. Her quest was on, and Piggy Paint was born in late 2008.
Piggy Paint can now be found in gift shops and boutiques all over the country. It has even won the MACT award given to non-toxic, safe products approved by moms and child tested. It’s manufactured in the USA using raw materials sourced from the USA as well.
Originally the nail polish was just for children, but the requests by women have caused them to expand their line to include sophisticated colors for “refined” piggies.
Because Melanie started this as a home-based business with limited income, social media including Facebook and Twitter was the best, most economical way to initially spread the word about Piggy Paint. Mommy bloggers loved the samples she would send and then turn around and blog about her products.
Eventually, they began marketing their products through tradeshows, PR campaigns, print advertisements, and word of mouth—happy customers are the best advertisements! Their terrific website has also been very important for online business.
One of the reasons, Piggy Paint is doing so well is because of their retailers. Some great boutiques in LA sell their products so many celebrities have become big fans. Their wholesale business comprises the majority of the business, as consumers are always looking to their favorite specialty stores to carry unique products.
Retailers either order from them at the numerous trade shows they attend, direct by phone/fax/email, or through one of their sales reps. They are getting ready to launch the wholesale section of their website, which will make the ordering process even easier.
In addition to selling individual polishes and remover, they also sell gift sets that contain either 3 polishes or 2 polishes/remover. They use Nashville Wraps’ 4×6” and 5×7” organza bags to package these sets. They also use our gift wrap, as well as tissue paper and bubble wrap for packing orders. Their trade show displays are also filled with Nashville Wraps’ eco-friendly wood excelsior.
“We love that the items from Nashville Wraps are always in stock and ready to ship along with such wonderful customer service!” stated Melanie.
Melanie’s best advice to other entrepreneurs like herself, “Ask for help and keep a positive attitude. Also, pray, pray, and pray some more. Be careful, because if you ask, you just might receive!”
